What is a General Internal Medicine Specialist?

All physicians who are “internists” complete 3 years of internal medicine training after medical school. Some will go on to pursue single system sub-specialties whereas general internal medicine sub-specialty training is an additional 2 years (or more) focused on integrating clinical presentations, diagnostics and care plans for multi system disease. All general internists are internal medicine trained but not all internal medicine physicians have general internal medicine sub-specialty certification. As patients become more complicated in their care plans, this becomes more important.

All of our clinic physicians also provide inpatient medical care for patients in the Peter Lougheed Hospital. We are committed to providing continuity of care, both inpatient and outpatient, for our patients. We strive to adapt our services to help mesh with the needs of the community where we work. We are the only general internal medicine clinic in NE Calgary where physicians are able to see their patients both in hospital and in the clinic setting. With complex medical care, this is essential being able to deliver care to our patients in all the places where they need our help.

We will work with you as a patient to develop individualized care plans that address your unique social and medical situation and support you and your primary care team to ensure you are positioned for the most successful health outcome.
